Hanson brick works in the running for top European environmental award

Hanson UK’s Measham brick works has been selected as a finalist in the 2012 European Business Awards for the Environment (EBAE).

Selected as one of 12 UK finalists by the RSA Environment Awards Forum, Hanson’s £50 million brick factory in Measham, Leicestershire, has been recognised in the awards’ Process category for its sustainable brick-making.

One of the most modern and efficient soft-brick factories in Europe, Measham has exemplary low-carbon credentials. Its fully automated low energy, zero waste production process uses 50 per cent less energy than conventional soft mud brick plants and Hanson’s Ecostock® range of bricks, which are made there, have the lowest embodied CO2 available.

Built on brown field land, previously a landfill site for factory waste, the factory has been built to the Building Research Establishment’s (BRE) ‘very good’ environmental standard with a focus on natural lighting and ventilation, employee health and welfare, energy saving and water conservation.

Martin Crow, Hanson’s head of environment and sustainability, said: “It is great that our Measham factory has been recognised as an example of Hanson’s commitment to investing in sustainable production processes.

“We have worked hard to ensure sustainability is at the heart of our business and being selected as a finalist shows that the EBAE understands the contribution our Measham brick works is providing to sustainable construction in the UK.”

The EBAE awards recognise new or innovative contributions to sustainable development, with entrants selected from previous winners of RSA Accredited Award Schemes from the past two years.
